TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2014: BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB – SO LONG SEE YOU TOMORROW

Well, the very last day of 2014 has arrived, and it has certainly been an incredible year for music. You voted for your favourite albums and number 1 is finally here...

North London band Bombay Bicycle Club have been described as many things since the release of their debut album in 2009, including ‘rockers’, ‘nouveaux-folkers’, and the ‘creator of  indie-dance anthems’. But it wasn’t until their fourth album, So Long See You Tomorrow, that it felt that they have finally settled, and the incredible elements of each of their preceding albums was equally mixed into a great 44-minute-55-second LP.

One of the beauties of this album is the incorporation of the cultures the band have picked up on their travels, considering they wrote it in not just the UK, but also India, Japan, Turkey and the USA. The Indian-themed single ‘Feel’ I would easily argue is up there in the best songs of the year, ‘Home By Now’ has a LA-infused RnB groove, and ‘Eyes Off You’ is reminiscent of the melancholy yet dance-like aspects of London-homed A Different Kind of Fix, such as ‘Still’ and ‘Lights Up, Words Gone’.

Nothing makes a great album like an opening track like ‘Overdone’. The energetic, electrica song sets the scene for the whole album: Bombay want to have fun. This is epitomised by lead single ‘Carry Me’. Never one to shy away from female guest vocals, including the refreshing sounds of Rae Morris and Lucy Rose, Steadman has created the perfect indie-disco song, combining crashing percussion and echoing synths and guitars, hollowing vocals and catchy bass riffs. Live-hits ‘Luna’, ‘Come To’ and ‘It’s Alright Now’ only further the band’s character and quality on this album. Musically, the album is perfect, but it also maintains the personality and experiences these four young 20-something-year-olds have.

There’s a reason this album topped the UK charts in February and you lovely voters have made it your number one album of 2014, and that is because it is an incredible album made by an incredible band. Bombay’s musical evolution has not made them better nor worse, but has instead maintained an exciting and innovative excellence than has been seen from day 1- winning Battle of the Bands all those years ago.
