With the first taste of their third ep, aptly titled ep three, The Magic Gang are oozing confidence. Joe Cadman reviews their latest single.
The first release on former Maccabees man Felix White’s Yala! Records, the Brighton boys care free, indie-pop has never felt bigger. Effortlessly mixing the bubbly nature of their first ep with the melancholy of their second, it’s safe to say that The Magic Gang have found their stride.
The quartet have a knack for nailing huge choruses and ‘How Can I Compete’ is no different; this will be stuck in your head for days on end and there won’t be a thing you can do about it. Toe tapping chords spiral into a riff that’s aimed squarely at your hips whilst frontman Jack Kaye and guitarists Kristian Smith and Gus Taylor’s harmonies are so melodic and comforting it’s like your mums made your favourite meal for tea. If you’re looking for anything hard hitting, then this isn’t the track for you. But if you’re after a cheery tune to help you forget all the shite in the world for 2 minutes and 54 seconds, look no further.
‘How Can I Compete’ is the perfect indication of the direction that The Magic Gang are going in, and at this rate there seems to be no stopping them. This won’t be the last you hear of The Magic Gang in 2017 and that is a very exciting prospect.
